1 Why these indices matter for your exam

Examiners love these rankings because they are objective, they change every year (making them "current"), and they test whether a candidate reads the newspaper regularly. Questions usually come in three forms:

Human Development Index (HDI) — UNDP

Part of the annual Human Development Report, the HDI measures health (life expectancy), education (years of schooling) and standard of living (GNI per capita). In the 2025 report, India ranked 130 of 193, in the "medium human development" category.

Global Innovation Index (GII) — WIPO

Released by the World Intellectual Property Organization, the GII ranks economies on innovation. India climbed to 38th of 139 in 2025 — a remarkable rise from 81st in 2015, and the top innovator in Central & Southern Asia. Switzerland topped the index.

Global Hunger Index (GHI)

Jointly published by Concern Worldwide (Ireland) and Welthungerhilfe (Germany), it tracks hunger through child stunting, wasting, undernourishment and child mortality. India was placed 102nd in 2025, in the "serious" category. India has, in the past, questioned this index's methodology.

World Happiness Report — UN SDSN

Produced by the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network with Gallup and the Oxford Wellbeing Research Centre. India ranked 116 of 147 in the 2026 report (up two places from 118th). Finland topped it for the ninth year running.

Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) — Transparency International

Ranks countries by perceived public-sector corruption. India improved to 91 of 182 in the 2025 edition (released early 2026), up from 96th; Denmark remained the least corrupt.

Global Peace Index (GPI) — Institute for Economics & Peace

Measures peacefulness via conflict, safety and militarization. India dropped to 127 of 163 in the 2026 edition (released June 2026), down from 115th a year earlier. Iceland remains the most peaceful country.

World Press Freedom Index — Reporters Without Borders (RSF)

Assesses media freedom across 180 countries. India ranked 157th in 2026 — down six places from 151st, remaining in the "very serious" category. Norway topped the list.

Global Gender Gap Report — World Economic Forum

Measures gender parity across economy, education, health and politics. India was placed 131 of 148 in 2025. Iceland has led for over a decade.

Henley Passport Index — Henley & Partners

Ranks passports by visa-free access. India stood at 81st in the 2026 index (updated through the year). Singapore held the world's most powerful passport.

Global Firepower Index — GlobalFirepower.com

Ranks military strength on 60+ factors. India held its place as the 4th most powerful military in 2026, behind the USA, Russia and China.

Sustainable Development Report (SDG Index) — UN SDSN

Tracks progress on the 17 SDGs. In 2025 India entered the top 100 for the first time at 99 of 167, up from 109.

IMD World Competitiveness Ranking — IMD, Switzerland

Measures how well countries manage resources for competitiveness. India ranked 41 of 69 in 2025.

Environmental Performance Index (EPI) — Yale & Columbia

A joint Yale + Columbia effort on environmental health and ecosystem vitality. India was 176 of 177 in the 2026 edition, largely due to emissions and air quality. Estonia topped it.

Global Terrorism Index (GTI) — Institute for Economics & Peace

Measures the impact of terrorism. India ranked 13 of 163 in 2026 (marginally improved from 14th). Note: the same body (IEP) also releases the Global Peace Index — a common exam trap.

Global Liveability Index — EIU

The Economist Intelligence Unit's annual ranking of cities on stability, healthcare, culture, education and infrastructure. In 2026, Delhi ranked 120 of 173 and Mumbai close behind, both improving on the year before. Copenhagen topped the world's most liveable cities.

Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI) — Germanwatch

Published by Germanwatch, NewClimate Institute and Climate Action Network, it tracks emissions, renewables, energy use and climate policy. India was placed 23rd in the 2026 edition — among the highest-ranked large economies, though the top three spots were left empty as no country was judged fully on a 1.5°C path.

Global Reform Rankings — Competere Foundation

A newer index scoring economies on the pace and depth of structural reforms. India jumped to 57th in 2026, a sharp rise from 82nd, reflecting reform momentum in trade, taxation and ease of doing business.

Index of Economic Freedom — Heritage Foundation

Grades economies on rule of law, government size, regulatory efficiency and open markets. India ranked 128th in 2025 (score 53.0), "mostly unfree".

4 Key trends to remember

Notice the pattern: India performs strongly on innovation, military power, logistics and digital readiness, but ranks poorly on hunger, gender parity, press freedom and the environment.

5 Final revision tips

Global reports and indices are more than numbers — they're a mirror to a nation's strengths and gaps, and a permanent fixture in exams. Memorize the publishing bodies first (the most-asked part), keep the quick-revision table handy, and update yourself as each new edition releases through the year.
