This section gives you a complete picture of life after getting selected through SSC CPO — from salary breakdown to job responsibilities, perks, career growth, and lifestyle expectations across different forces.
7.1 Pay Scale (Per Official Notification)
Per the SSC CPO 2025 Official Notification, both posts are placed under Pay Level 6 of the 7th Pay Commission. The basic pay scale is the same for both posts — what differs is the classification, the force you serve in, and the special allowances applicable.
| Post | Classification | Pay Level / Scale |
|---|---|---|
| Sub-Inspector (Executive) in Delhi Police | Group C (Non-Gazetted) | Level 6 Rs. 35,400 to Rs. 1,12,400 |
| Sub-Inspector (GD) in CAPFs (BSF, CISF, CRPF, ITBP, SSB) | Group B (Non-Gazetted), Non-Ministerial | Level 6 Rs. 35,400 to Rs. 1,12,400 |
Allowances Breakdown (As per 7th Pay Commission)
In addition to the basic pay specified in the official notification, employees receive the following allowances. These allowances significantly increase the in-hand salary above the basic pay figure.
| Allowance | Details |
|---|---|
| Dearness Allowance (DA) | Approximately 58 percent of basic pay (as of 2025–26). Revised twice a year by Government of India to offset inflation. |
| House Rent Allowance (HRA) | X-class cities (e.g. Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru): 27 percent of basic pay. Y-class cities: 18 percent. Z-class cities: 9 percent. (HRA gets revised when DA crosses certain thresholds — current rates may have been revised upward.) |
| Transport Allowance (TA) | X-class and higher TPTA cities: Rs. 3,600 plus DA on TA. Other cities: Rs. 1,800 plus DA on TA. Higher rates for officers in higher pay levels. |
| Other Standard Allowances | Children Education Allowance (CEA), Leave Travel Concession (LTC), Special Compensatory Allowance (location-based), and post-specific allowances per official rules. |
7.3 Force-Specific Special Allowances
Beyond standard 7th Pay Commission allowances, SSC CPO posts come with force-specific special allowances:
| Allowance | Applicable For / Purpose |
|---|---|
| Ration Allowance | CAPF SIs receive monthly ration allowance (approximately Rs. 3,000 per month) when not provided ration in kind. Delhi Police SIs do NOT receive this |
| Risk Allowance / Hazard Allowance | CAPF SIs in operational areas (border zones, Naxal-affected areas) receive risk allowance per government rules |
| Detachment Allowance | CAPF SIs deployed away from their permanent station receive detachment allowance for the period of deployment |
| Free Accommodation | CAPF SIs at field postings often get free government quarters or barracks. Delhi Police SIs may get government accommodation per allotment |
| Free Medical (Self + Family) | Both Delhi Police and CAPF SIs and their dependents get free medical treatment at force hospitals or empanelled hospitals |
| Free Rations (in kind) | CAPF SIs at remote postings receive free rations in kind. When not in kind, ration allowance is given |
| LTC / Free Travel | Standard LTC plus additional free railway warrants for CAPF personnel for self and family at certain frequency |
7.4 Approximate In-Hand Salary by Post and City
Estimates of monthly in-hand salary at entry level (basic + DA + HRA + TA + special allowances, after standard NPS and CGEGIS deductions). Actual amounts vary based on actual posting, force, and individual circumstances.
| Post / Force | X-Class City | Y-Class City | Z-Class City |
|---|---|---|---|
| SI Delhi Police (Level 6) — Delhi posting (X-class) | Approx. Rs. 65,000 - 73,000 | Not applicable (Delhi only) | Not applicable (Delhi only) |
| SI CAPF (Level 6) — Urban posting | Approx. Rs. 65,000 - 75,000 (with ration allowance) | Approx. Rs. 60,000 - 68,000 (with ration allowance) | Approx. Rs. 55,000 - 62,000 (with ration allowance) |
| SI CAPF — Field / Border / Operational Posting | Approx. Rs. 70,000 - 82,000 (with risk + detachment allowances) | Approx. Rs. 65,000 - 75,000 (with risk + detachment allowances) | Approx. Rs. 60,000 - 70,000 (with risk + detachment allowances) |
7.5 Job Profile by Force (What you actually do)
Sub-Inspector — Delhi Police (Executive)
Delhi Police SIs maintain law and order in the National Capital Territory. The role involves urban policing, including: registering FIRs at police stations, investigating cognizable offences, conducting patrolling, supervising constables and Head Constables, court duty, presenting evidence, traffic management, VIP security duties, and crowd control during protests / events. As Officer-in-Charge or in supervisory roles, you handle day-to-day station functioning. The duty environment is urban with reasonable infrastructure, but workload is high (12+ hour shifts during VIP visits, festivals, elections). Delhi Police is the only police force where you can spend your entire career within Delhi without inter-state transfers — a unique advantage.
Sub-Inspector — Border Security Force (BSF)
BSF guards India's international borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh. As BSF SI, you lead a section of jawans on Border Outposts (BOPs), conduct day-night patrolling along the border, prevent infiltration, smuggling of arms, narcotics, and counterfeit currency, manage Indian fencing and floodlit border infrastructure, and coordinate with other forces during operations. Postings are at remote border villages. Family accommodation may not be available at BOPs (separated family postings common). Physical and mental stamina critical for harsh climate (deserts of Rajasthan, marshes of Sundarbans, high-altitude J&K).
Sub-Inspector — Central Industrial Security Force (CISF)
CISF protects critical infrastructure: airports (over 60 airports across India), Delhi Metro, atomic and space installations, refineries, sea ports, government buildings (including key ministries and Parliament), and major PSUs. As CISF SI, your role is supervisory access control, frisking, surveillance, anti-sabotage checks, VIP protection, and counter-terror response at sensitive installations. Considered the BEST CAPF for family life — postings at airports and metros are in cities (urban), shifts are structured (8-hour rotations typically), and family accommodation is generally available. CISF also has private sector deployment for major Indian companies (cost-recovery basis) which sometimes brings excellent perks.
Sub-Inspector — Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF)
CRPF is India's largest paramilitary force and the primary force for internal security. As CRPF SI, you may be deployed for: anti-Naxal operations in Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha, Bihar; counter-insurgency operations in Jammu & Kashmir; election duty across the country (every state during elections); riot control and law and order assistance to state police; VIP protection (PM's VIP security via SPG); United Nations peacekeeping deployments. CRPF postings are the toughest among CAPFs — frequent transfers, operational deployments away from family, and often in conflict zones. CRPF receives the highest risk allowances among CAPFs due to operational nature of duty.
Sub-Inspector — Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP)
ITBP guards the India-China border (Line of Actual Control) from Karakoram Pass in Ladakh to Jachep La in Arunachal Pradesh — over 3,488 km of high-altitude mountainous terrain (often above 9,000 to 18,000 feet). As ITBP SI, you serve at high-altitude border posts, conduct patrolling in extreme cold (temperatures down to -45°C), perform mountaineering and snow operations, and remain in continuous deployment cycles. ITBP is known for its mountaineering tradition (multiple Everest summits), excellent physical conditioning, and disaster relief work in mountains (Uttarakhand floods, Sikkim, Himachal). Tough lifestyle but immense pride in service.
Sub-Inspector — Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB)
SSB guards the open borders with Nepal (1,751 km) and Bhutan (699 km). As SSB SI, you conduct border patrolling, anti-smuggling operations (especially gold smuggling from Nepal), assist civilian authorities in border districts, and support population in border villages. SSB also performs civic action programs (medical camps, schools support) under "Friends of the Border People" outreach program. Border posting in Bihar, UP, West Bengal, Sikkim, Uttarakhand, Arunachal. Generally less hostile than CRPF/BSF deployments — Nepal and Bhutan are friendly nations. Good force for those wanting border duty without combat-zone stress.
Perks, Benefits & Job Security
Beyond salary and allowances, SSC CPO employees enjoy substantial benefits that make government jobs highly attractive:
Health & Insurance Benefits
- Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS): Comprehensive medical coverage for the employee, spouse, and dependent family members at empanelled hospitals.
- Central Government Employees Group Insurance Scheme (CGEGIS): Mandatory life insurance with savings component, deducted monthly from salary.
- Reimbursement of medical expenses for treatments not covered under CGHS, as per applicable rules.
Leave Entitlements
- Earned Leave (EL): 30 days per year, encashable at retirement.
- Casual Leave (CL): 8 days per year for short personal needs.
- Half Pay Leave (HPL): 20 days per year for medical or extended personal reasons.
- Maternity Leave (Women): 180 days as per Government of India rules.
- Paternity Leave (Men): 15 days within 6 months of child birth.
- Child Care Leave (Women): Up to 730 days during entire service for child care.
Retirement & Long-term Benefits
- National Pension System (NPS): 10 percent of basic plus DA contributed by employee, matched by 14 percent contribution from Government. Builds substantial retirement corpus.
- Gratuity: Lump sum amount payable at retirement based on years of service.
- Leave Encashment: Earned leave balance encashed at retirement.
- Pension benefits as per applicable rules at the time of retirement.
Other Benefits
- Job Security: Government jobs offer lifetime employment security with stable career progression.
- Leave Travel Concession (LTC): Reimbursement for travel within India once every 2 years (Hometown LTC) or once every 4 years (Anywhere in India LTC).
- Annual Increments: 3 percent increment on basic pay every year on the prescribed date.
- Festival Advance and Other Loans: Available at concessional rates as per government rules.
- Easy Bank Loans: Banks readily extend home loans, personal loans, and vehicle loans to government employees at preferential rates.
7.7 Career Growth & Promotions
SSC CPO offers a structured promotion hierarchy, though pace varies by force and individual performance:
Delhi Police Career Path
Sub-Inspector to Inspector (typically 12–15 years on time-bound promotion or seniority) to Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) (typically 8–10 years more) to Additional DCP (Deputy Commissioner of Police) and beyond. Some SIs reach DCP / Additional DCP level over a 30-year career. Departmental promotions and promotional examinations accelerate the path.
CAPF Career Path (BSF, CRPF, CISF, ITBP, SSB)
Sub-Inspector (SI) to Inspector (typically 8–12 years) to Assistant Commandant (Group A Gazetted, after departmental Limited Departmental Competitive Examination — LDCE) to Deputy Commandant to Commandant. CAPF SI promotion to Asst. Commandant via LDCE is the key Group A entry — those who clear LDCE quickly accelerate to officer cadre. Many CAPF officers retire at Commandant or DIG level after 30+ years of service.
Annual Increments and DA Hikes
All SSC CPO posts get 3 percent annual increment on basic pay every year automatically. DA hike happens twice a year (typically January and July) based on All-India Consumer Price Index. With promotions, basic pay revises upward by one full pay level. Combined effect: salary roughly doubles every 8–10 years even without promotions.
7.8 Lifestyle After Joining
Work-Life Balance
SSC CPO posts demand high physical and mental stamina. Work hours are NOT predictable like office jobs — duty rosters extend to 12+ hours during operations, festivals, elections, and VIP movements. Delhi Police SIs may work 6 days a week with rotational off days. CAPF SIs in operational deployment may go months without leave. Off-duty time is generally less than typical government jobs, but compensated by leave entitlements and operational rest periods.
Posting Locations
Delhi Police: Entirely within Delhi (no inter-state transfers) — major lifestyle advantage. CAPFs: Across India, including remote border areas and operational zones. CAPF officers typically rotate between Headquarters / Sector / Field postings every 2–4 years. Family postings are not always possible at field locations — many CAPF SIs maintain a separated-family arrangement (family in home town, officer at duty station).
Family Life
Delhi Police: Generally good family life as you remain in Delhi. Government accommodation may be available based on allotment. Children get admission in central schools (Kendriya Vidyalaya) where preference exists. CAPFs: Family life is challenging during operational deployments. CAPFs run their own school networks (BSF, CRPF, ITBP run schools in major settlements). Wives and children of CAPF personnel form strong community networks (as common in armed forces). Long-term, CAPF personnel often build a second life in their home town for family stability while serving across India.
Social Status & Prestige
Sub-Inspector posts carry significant social status and authority. The uniform commands respect in Indian society. CAPF Sub-Inspectors gain immense pride serving in nationally recognised forces (BSF Day, CRPF Day, etc.). Delhi Police SIs are integral to law and order in the national capital. Both posts open many doors: bank loans, marriage prospects, social respect, and life-long government employee identity.
Things to Be Aware Of
- Physical demands are real: PET / PST is required to enter; physical fitness must be maintained throughout career
- Stress and risk are significantly higher than office jobs (especially CRPF, BSF, ITBP in operational areas)
- Frequent transfers in CAPFs disrupt family life — many officers keep family in home town
- Long shifts, night duties, festival duties are routine — not suitable for those seeking 9-to-5 lifestyle
- Career growth is slower than CGL Inspector cadre — first promotion to Inspector takes 8–15 years depending on force
- Operational hazards include encounter risks (CRPF in Naxal areas, J&K duty), terrain hazards (ITBP in mountains), and exposure to extreme weather
- In return for these challenges: high social respect, financial security, free medical, robust pension, family welfare schemes, and the satisfaction of serving the nation

Preparation tips from Parcham Classes
Start Physical Preparation Today
The biggest CPO mistake — focusing only on the written exam and ignoring PET/PST until Tier 1 result. By then, only 3 months remain. Begin running, push-ups, and field practice from Day 1. Your body needs months, not weeks, to reach exam-level fitness.
Practise Sectional Time Management
CPO Tier 1 has a 30-minute sectional time limit. Every mock you take should follow this timing — practise switching sections under time pressure until it feels natural. The SSC Comprehensive Batch by Parcham Classes includes sectional-timed mocks built for this exact pattern.
English Language is the Real Filter
Paper 2 is 200 questions of pure English in 2 hours — 200 marks of grammar, comprehension, vocabulary, and error spotting. Hindi-medium aspirants struggle most here. Build English through daily editorial reading and consistent grammar practice. The SSC Comprehensive Batch by Parcham Classes includes a focused English module aligned to CPO-style questions.
Master Your General Awareness — 50 Marks of Easy Pickings
Out of 200 marks in Paper 1, 50 are pure GA. The SSC General Awareness Batch by Parcham Classes combined with the SSC Static GK Batch covers everything CPO tests. Add the Current Affairs Complete Kit by Parcham Classes for the dynamic portion.
Verify PET Standards — Don't Self-Estimate
"I can run 1.6km in 7 minutes" — students often say this without timing themselves on a measured track. The standard is 6.5 minutes for males. Use a stopwatch on a real track. Self-estimation kills careers.
Get Your LMV Driving Licence Early
Male candidates applying for Delhi Police SI need an LMV (4-wheeler) licence at the time of medical. Application processing takes 3–6 months in Rajasthan. Start the licence process while you're still in written-prep stage.
Get a Basic Medical Check Done Now
Beyond PET/PST, the final medical examination disqualifies many candidates for vision issues, BMI concerns, or color blindness. A basic check now identifies remediable conditions in time. Some issues correct with treatment, others cannot — better to know early.
Focused Revision in the Final Stretch
For the last 30 days, revision matters more than new topics. The SSC One Liner E-Book by Parcham Classes gives you compact, fact-based revision — ideal for keeping GA fresh while you focus on Paper 2 English and physical training.
