Movement: A slow, hypnotic chain dance — hands linked, circling like swaying mountain trees.
Sound: Karnal & Ransingha horns with Dhol & Nagara.

Devotion, Whirling Colour & Nomadic Lore
Dance becomes a community spectacle that can turn a whole town into an open-air floor.
GujaratGarba & Dandiya Raas
Story: The nine nights of Navratri. Garba (from Garbha, womb) honours Goddess Durga; Dandiya mock-fights the demon Mahishasura.
Movement: Garba — concentric circles moving counter-clockwise with claps; Dandiya — pairs striking wooden sticks.
Attire: Mirror-work Chaniya Choli; men in pleated Kediyu.
RajasthanGhoomar & Kalbelia
Ghoomar: Of the Bhil tribe, adopted by Rajput royalty; elegant pirouettes flare the layered ghaghra into a whirlpool of colour.
Kalbelia: Of the nomadic snake-charmer tribe; black silver-threaded outfits & flexible, cobra-like movements. UNESCO ICH (2010).
MaharashtraLavani
Story: Once entertained soldiers in the Peshwa era; themes span romance, religion & sharp political satire.
Movement: Powerful fast-tempo footwork, sharp hip movements & intense expressions.
Attire: The 9-yard Nauvari saree & heavy ghungroos, to the Dholki beat.

Bamboo Beats & Martial Power
Some of the most visually unique, physically demanding and nature-linked styles in the country.
AssamBihu
Story: The defining dance of Assam — Rongali Bihu welcomes spring & the Assamese New Year.
Movement: Rapid fluttering hands, brisk steps & a rhythmic hip sway symbolising youth & fertility.
Sound: Dhol, the Pepa (buffalo-horn pipe) & the Gogona (bamboo jaw harp).
MizoramCheraw
Story: The famous “Bamboo Dance”, once performed for the safe passage of a departed mother's soul.
Movement: Men clap long bamboo poles on the ground; dancers step in & out of the shifting squares with flawless timing.
Odisha · WB · JharkhandChhau
Story: Acts out grand Ramayana & Mahabharata episodes and nature themes. UNESCO ICH (2010).
Movement: Athletic & cinematic — airborne jumps & mock combat; huge papier-mâché masks (Seraikela & Purulia; Mayurbhanj is maskless).
4 · Southern India
Deep Rituals & Heavy Drums
Folk forms bound up with temple tradition, mysticism and sheer physical endurance.
KarnatakaDollu Kunitha
Story: A ritual for Beereshwara (a form of Shiva), performed by the Kuruba community.
Movement: Men carry large Dollu drums, beating in sync while forming circles, high jumps & human pyramids.
KeralaTheyyam
Story: A 1,000-year ritual of North Malabar — the deity is believed to possess the dancer to bless the village.
Visuals: Towering headdresses, vivid facial paint & the thunderous Chenda drum; the dancer enters a trance, dancing through embers.
Tamil NaduKaragattam
Story: An ancient ritual dance dedicated to Mariamman, goddess of rain & health.
Movement: Dancers balance decorated Karagam pots on the head while doing acrobatics, hoops & floor pick-ups.

Why folk dances matter today
India's folk dances are radically inclusive — they need no grand stage or elite audience, only an open courtyard, a steady drumbeat and a community ready to celebrate. In a modernising world they are a living archive of our history, a reminder of a time when human life moved with the rhythms of nature and the seasons.
