Bilateral vs Multilateral — the core idea

Two words decide most questions on this topic:

Bilateral exercises are between India and exactly one other country (e.g. Yudh Abhyas with the USA, Varuna with France). Multilateral exercises involve three or more nations (e.g. Malabar with the Quad, or MILAN which India hosts for 50+ navies).

A handy memory rule: if the exercise name pairs one foreign country with India, it is bilateral; if it is a "gathering" with many flags, it is multilateral. Below, the Army, Navy and Air Force lists are mostly bilateral, followed by a dedicated multilateral section.
